Joyce Wieland (* 30. Juni 1931 in Toronto, Ontario; † 27. Juni 1998 ebenda) war eine kanadische avantgardistische Filmregisseurin, Experimental-Filmemacherin und Mixed-Media Künstlerin.
Leben und Werk
Joyce Wieland studierte zunächst Kunst an der Central Tech School in Toronto. Nach einer Reise nach Europa begann sie einen Job als Film-Animateurin und lernte dort ihren Ehemann und Kollegen, den kanadischen Künstler Michael Snow kennen.
Joyce Wieland hatte ihre erste Einzelausstellung in der Isaacs Gallery in Toronto im Jahr 1960, sie war eine der ersten weiblichen Künstlerinnen, die von einer zeitgenössischen kanadischen kommerzielle Galerie vertreten wurde.
Im Jahr 1963 zogen Wieland und Snow nach New York City und lebten dort zehn Jahre. Nach einem Überfall und einer versuchten Vergewaltigung an Joyce zogen die beiden zurück nach Toronto.
Joyce Wieland war mit zwei Filmen: Reason Over Passion/la raison avant la passion und Sailboat als Teilnehmerin der Documenta 5 in Kassel im Jahr 1972 in der Abteilung Filmschau: New American Cinema vertreten.
Joyce Wieland wurde im Jahr 1982 mit dem Order of Canada ausgezeichnet.

Joyce Wieland OC RCA (June 30, 1930 – June 27, 1998) was a Canadian experimental filmmaker and mixed media artist.[1] Wieland found success as a painter when she began her career in Toronto in the 1950s. In 1962, Wieland moved to New York City and expanded her career as an artist by including new materials and mixed media work. During that time, she also rose to prominence as an experimental filmmaker and soon, institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York were showing her films.[2] In 1971, Wieland's True Patriot Love exhibition was the first solo exhibition by a living Canadian female artist at the National Gallery of Canada.[2] In 1982, Wieland received the honour of an Officer of the Order of Canada[3] and in 1987, she was awarded the Toronto Arts Foundation's Visual Arts Award. She was also a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.[4][fr] Joyce Wieland
