Carlos Cañas (September 3, 1924 - April 14, 2013)[1] was a Salvadoran painter[2] who studied art and theory at the School of Arts of El Salvador. In 1950, he received a scholarship to study art, history, aesthetics, and literature in Madrid at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.

Cañas participated at the First Latin American Biennial, Spain (1951); in the Fourth Biennial of the Engraving, Japan (1964); in the Sutton Gallery, EUA (1979), amongst other important exhibitions at the worldwide level.

In 2012, he received national prize of culture, Premio Nacional de Cultura of El Salvador.[3]

Carlos Cañas también conocido como Gonzalo Rodríguez Cañas,[1] Carlos Gonzalo Cañas[2] o Carlos Augusto Cañas[1] (San Salvador, 3 de septiembre de 1924 - ibídem, 14 de abril de 2013)[3] fue uno de los mayores exponentes en la historia de la pintura de El Salvador. Se considera el precursor del arte abstracto en su país, aunque su prolífica obra se expresó en diferentes corrientes artísticas a través de los años.[4][5]El año 2012 fue reconocido con el Premio Nacional de Cultura.[6]
