Jonah Kinigstein (born June 26, 1923) is an American artist known for his Expressionist paintings.

Biography


Kinigstein was born on June 26, 1923 in New York City.[1][2] He attended Cooper Union, the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, and Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma.[3] In the early 1950s he traveled to Paris where he exhibited at the Galerie Huit.[4] He is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship as well as a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation award.[5]

Kinigstein's work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art,[6] the Smithsonian American Art Museum,[1] and the Whitney Museum of American Art.[7]

In 2014 a book of his cartoons entitled The Emperor's New Clothes: The Tower of Babel in the "Art" World was published by Fantagraphics Underground.[8] In 2022 Unrepentant Artist: The Paintings of Jonah Kinigstein was published.[9]
