He graduated from the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris. Xavier Veilhan continued his artistic education in Berlin at the Hochschule der Künste, in the atelier of artist Georg Baselitz. Later on, he returned to Paris to finish his studies in 1989 at the Institut des hautes Etudes en Arts plastiques.
He currently works with sculpture, installation, painting and photography, as well as hybrids of these. He also works in performance work and filmmaking. He is known for experimenting with the notions of the generic, of the industrially produced object and of universal representation. He expresses concerns with the scenography of a dedicated presentation, Veilhan addresses issues of perception as well as the physical and temporal relationships created within the context of the exhibition format. His work is to be found in important public and private collections worldwide. He has also made several permanent public works in numerous locations across the world, as well as creating temporary site-specific interventions within Architectones,[3] a project which has received critical acclaim since 2012.
Xavier Veilhan is represented by Andréhn-Schiptjenko (Stockholm and Paris), Perrotin (Paris, New York, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai), Galeria Nara Roesler (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and New York) and 313 Art Project (Seoul, Paris).
2017: Venice Biennale
He was chosen to represent France at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017. The French Pavilion of the Venice Biennale 2017 has been adapted by Xavier Veilhan and the curators of the pavilion, Christian Marclay and Lionel Bovier, for which professional musicians from all over the world could take part throughout the event.
