Damophon (en Grec : Δαμοφῶν) est un sculpteur de la Grèce antique de l'époque hellénistique.

Biographie

Originaire de Messène, il était célèbre pour avoir orné d'un Cybèle en marbre de Paros la place publique d'Ithôme ainsi que statues le temple d'Esculape.

Il fut aussi choisi pour restaurer la statue de Zeus de Phidias[1].

Des fragments de ses œuvres sont conservés au Musée national archéologique d'Athènes.

Damophon von Messene (altgriechisch Δαμοφῶν), der Sohn des Philip, war ein griechischer Bildhauer des 2. Jahrhunderts v. Chr., der für seine Heimatstadt Messene eine große Anzahl von Götterbildern schuf, zum Teil in der schwierigen chryselephantinen Goldelfenbeintechnik oder in Nachahmung derselben aus Gold und Marmor.

Damophon (Greek: Δαμοφῶν; fl. 2nd century BC) was an ancient Greek sculptor of the Hellenistic period from Messene, who executed many statues for the people of Messene, Megalopolis, Aegium, Lycosura and other cities of Peloponnesus. He was also known beyond Peloponnese; his works were in other places like the Leucas, Cephallenia, Kynthos, Melos, and Oiantheia.
