Formée à la Southern Cross University, à Lismore (1998), titulaire d'un Bachelor of Fine Arts en peinture au Pratt Institute à Brooklyn (2000), et d'un Master of Fine Arts à la Yale University School of Arts à New Haven (2002), Mickalene Thomas vit et travaille à Brooklyn, New York.

Mickalene Thomas (born January 28, 1971) is a contemporary African-American visual artist best known as a painter of complex works using rhinestones, acrylic, and enamel.[1] Thomas's collage work is inspired from popular art histories and movements, including Impressionism, Cubism, Dada and the Harlem Renaissance.[2] Her work draws from Western art history, pop art and visual culture to examine ideas around femininity, beauty, race, sexuality, and gender.[1]
