Minor White ( – ) est un photographe américain, né à Minneapolis.

Biographie


White obtint un diplôme de botanique, avec une mineure en anglais à l'Université du Minnesota in 1933.

White commença son œuvre d'artiste en écrivant des poésies et commença sa carrière de photographe en 1938. Il rejoignit d'abord le club photographique de l'Oregon, puis prit des commandes pour la Works Progress Administration. Il expose alors au musée d'art de Portland.

Après un service dans le renseignement pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il reprit ses études à l'université Columbia. Il rencontra alors de célèbres photographes tels Ansel Adams, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston qui influencèrent son travail.

Sur invitation de Adams, Minor White se rendit sur la côte Ouest pour rejoindre Adams, Dorothea Lange et Imogen Cunningham dans le premier département américain de photographie d'art qui se créait au San Francisco Art Institute.

White cofonda le magazine Aperture, toujours avec Ansel Adams et Dorothea Lange entre autres. Il dirigea le magazine jusqu'en 1975.

Il travailla en outre comme commissaire d'exposition à la George Eastman House et dirigea également son magazine Image.

White passa les dix dernières années de sa vie à enseigner au MIT.

White, bisexuel, fut toute sa vie tourmenté par ce penchant à l'époque inacceptable socialement. Certaines de ses photographies d'hommes nus sont considérées comme des chefs-d'œuvre du genre, mais publiées uniquement en 1989.

Minor Martin White (July 9, 1908 – June 24, 1976) was an American photographer, theoretician, critic, and educator. He combined an intense interest in how people viewed and understood photographs with a personal vision that was guided by a variety of spiritual and intellectual philosophies. Starting in Oregon in 1937 and continuing until he died in 1976, White made thousands of black-and-white and color photographs of landscapes, people, and abstract subject matter, created with both technical mastery and a strong visual sense of light and shadow. He taught many classes, workshops, and retreats on photography at the California School of Fine Arts, Rochester Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, other schools, and in his own home. He lived much of his life as a closeted gay man, afraid to express himself publicly for fear of loss of his teaching jobs, and some of his most compelling images are figure studies of men whom he taught or with whom he had relationships. He helped start, and for many years was editor of, the photography magazine Aperture. After his death in 1976, White was hailed as one of America's greatest photographers.[1]
