Sophia Theresa "Sophie" Pemberton, ou Sophie Pemberton Deane-Drummond (13 février 1869 - 31 octobre 1959) est une peintre canadienne[1]. En mars 1899, elle est la première femme à remporter le Prix Julian de l'Académie Julian[2] pour un portrait.

Née à Victoria (Colombie-Britannique), Sophie[note 1] est la fille de Teresa Jane Grantoff et Joseph Despard Pemberton (en) (1821–1893). Elle fréquente la Slade School of Art de Londres de 1892 à 1896[1] et l'Académie Julian[3].

Sophia Theresa "Sophie" Pemberton or Sophie Pemberton Deane-Drummond (13 February 1869 - 31 October 1959) was a Canadian painter[1] considered to be British Columbia's first professional woman artist.[2] Despite the social limitations placed on female artists at the time, she made a noteworthy contribution to Canadian art and, in 1899, was the first Canadian woman to win the Prix Julian from the Académie Julian for her portraiture.[3] She was a near contemporary of Emily Carr, and the two artists spent much of their lives in the same small city.
