Il est diplômé du Collège des beaux-arts de Gia Định ( Cao Đẳng Mỹ Thuật Gia Định ) en 1965. Avec des artistes de sa génération, tels que Đỗ Thị Ninh (1947-), il fait partie de la génération de peintres qui ont émergé au début des années 1980 et qui se sont rebellés contre les traditions de l'EBAI français et par la suite des écoles socialistes d'art vietnamien[2]. Il a été envoyé pendant une période dans un camp de rééducation . Depuis 1994, Em expose principalement à Hong Kong et à l'étranger et certaines de ses toiles ont été acquises par Bill Clinton[3].

Đỗ Quang Em (Ninh Thuận, Annam, Indochina, France (under the occupation of Japan), 1942 – 3 August 2021[1]) was a Vietnamese painter based in Saigon, South Vietnam, then Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He graduated from Gia Định College of Fine Arts (Cao Đẳng Mỹ Thuật Gia Định) in 1965. Along with contemporaries such as Đỗ Thị Ninh (1947-) he was one of the generation of painters who emerged in the early 1980s which rebelled against the traditions of the French EBAI and afterward socialist schools of Vietnamese art.[2] He was for a period sent to a re-education camp.
