Lambert Sustris (Amsterdam, 1515-1520 circa – Padova?, 1584 circa) è stato un pittore olandese, fu padre di Friedrich Sustris.

Biografia

Si formò a Utrecht o a Haarlem nell'ambiente di Jan van Scorel o di Maarten van Heemskerck.

In giovane età visitò Roma, come è confermato dalla scoperta della sua firma nella Domus Aurea, e Venezia, dove entrò nell'atelier di Tiziano. In quanto membro dell'entourage del celebre pittore, partecipò nel 1548 e nel 1550 alla Dieta di Augusta, dove tornò nel 1542 ed ebbe l'opportunità di ritrarre numerosi nobili della Svevia, come quelli della famiglia Vöhlin. A partire dal 1543 dipinse il ciclo di affreschi della Villa dei Vescovi a Luvigliano di Torreglia.

Tra il 1548 ed il 1553 si recò più volte ad Augusta; a questo periodo risalgono i numerosi ritratti eseguiti per nobili e clero. Per il cardinale Otto Truchsess von Waldburg realizzò un Battesimo di Cristo ora nel museo di Caen.

Negli anni sessanta si stabilì a Padova, dove morì verosimilmente, in un anno imprecisato dopo il 1568.

Stile

Fu importante soprattutto come pittore di paesaggi. La sua particolare fusione tra stile olandese e italiano fu un decisivo modello per lo sviluppo dei paesaggi ideali del XVII secolo.

Lambert Sustris (* um 1515 in Amsterdam; † unbekannt, vielleicht nach 1591 in Venedig) war ein niederländischer Maler, der vor allem in Italien und dort speziell in Venedig tätig war. In Italien war er auch als Alberto de Olanda (Albert aus Holland)[1] bekannt. Lambert Sustris schuf sowohl manieristische mythologische Szenen als auch eindrucksvolle Bildnisse.[2]

Lambert Sustris (c. 1515-1520 – c. 1584) was a Dutch painter active mainly in Venice. The works Sustris completed in Italy exhibit either a Mannerist style or qualities that may be deemed proto-baroque. He is also referred to as Alberto de Olanda (Albert of Holland). He was born in Amsterdam, and only came to Venice when over 40 years old. His training is unknown, but he was utilized by the studio of Titian for the depiction of landscapes. He accompanied Titian on his trips to Augsburg in 1548 and 1550–1551, and there executed portraits. Returning to Venice, he was influenced by Parmigianino and Andrea Meldolla. He was a teacher to Girolamo Muziano. As the Muziano scholar, Patrizia Tosini has noted, Sustris' works, via his pupil Muziano, are a significant means by which a mid-sixteenth century Venetian interest in landscape and its role as a backdrop for historical subjects spread to Rome in the mid-to-late sixteenth century.[1] His son was Friedrich Sustris.
