George Leslie Hunter, meglio conosciuto come Leslie Hunter (Rothesay, 7 agosto 1877 – Glasgow, 7 dicembre 1931), è stato un pittore scozzese membro dei quattro coloristi scozzesi[1][2].

Biografia

Nato George Hunter (adotterà il nome Leslie durante il suo futuro soggiorno a San Francisco),[3] mostrò un'attitudine al disegno sin dalla tenera età. Studiò principalmente da autodidatta, ricevendo solo lezioni di pittura da un conoscente di famiglia. Quindicenne, andò a studiare negli Stati Uniti, principalmente in California, e vi rimase per quindici anni. Tornò poi in Scozia dedicandosi al disegno e alla pittura, ma viaggiò molto in Europa, soggiornando specialmente nel sud della Francia, ma anche nei Paesi Bassi, nel Passo di Calais e in Italia. I dipinti di Hunter, perlopiù nature morte, paesaggi e ritratti, furono acclamati per il loro trattamento della luce e divennero popolari fra i critici più progressisti del suo tempo. Oggi le sue tele sono fra le più note dell'arte scozzese.[4]

George Leslie Hunter (7 August 1877 – 7 December 1931) was a Scottish painter, regarded as one of the four artists of the Scottish Colourists group of painters.[1][2] Christened simply George Hunter, he adopted the name Leslie in San Francisco,[3] and Leslie Hunter became his professional name. Showing an aptitude for drawing at an early age, he was largely self-taught, receiving only elementary painting lessons from a family acquaintance. He spent fourteen years from the age of fifteen in the US, mainly in California.[4] Hunter made an extended trip to Scotland, Paris and New York from 1903–1905. In 1906 he left San Francisco and returned to Scotland, painting and drawing there, notably in Fife and at Loch Lomond. Subsequently he travelled widely in Europe, especially in the South of France, but also in the Netherlands, the Pas de Calais and Italy. He also returned to New York in 1924 and 1928–1929.[4]

Mostró una aptitud para dibujar a una edad muy temprana y fue en gran parte autodidacta, recibiendo lecciones de pintura elemental de un conocido familiar. Pasó quince años formativos desde la edad de quince años en los Estados Unidos, principalmente en California.[4]Luego regresó a Escocia, pintando y dibujando allí y en París. Posteriormente, viajó por gran parte de Europa, especialmente en el sur de Francia, pero también en los Países Bajos, el Paso de Calais e Italia.[4]
