Biografia

Ha studiato pittura e disegno a New York presso la Art Students League of New York dal 1954 al 1956.[1]

I dipinti dal 1959 al 1962 rappresentavano "archetipi religiosi mitici" e si basavano anche sulla Divina Commedia di Dante Alighieri come i dipinti del 1959 L'Inferno, Purgatorio e Paradiso, che corrispondono alla struttura in tre parti della Divina Commedia.[2]

Nel 1967 Smithson iniziò a esplorare le aree industriali intorno al New Jersey e rimase affascinato dalla vista di autocarri con cassone ribaltabile che scavavano tonnellate di terra e roccia che in un saggio descrisse come gli equivalenti dei monumenti dell'antichità.[3]

Nel settembre 1968 Smithson pubblicò il saggio A Sedimentation of the Mind: Earth Projects su Artforum e nel 1969 ha iniziato a produrre opere di earthwork per esplorare ulteriormente i concetti acquisiti dalle sue letture di William S. Burroughs, J.G. Ballard e George Kubler.[3]

I viaggi che ha intrapreso sono stati fondamentali per la sua pratica di artista e le sue sculture spesso includevano mappe e foto aeree di un luogo particolare.[2]

Il 20 luglio 1973 Smithson, un fotografo ed il pilota morirono in un incidente aereo mentre ispezionavano un sito nei pressi di Amarillo, in Texas, a bordo di un Beechcraft Baron E55; il National Transportation Safety Board ha attribuito l'incidente al mancato mantenimento della velocità da parte del pilota.[4]

Robert Smithson (Passaic, Condado de Passaic Nueva Jersey, 2 de enero de 1938 – Amarillo, Texas 20 de julio de 1973) fue un artista contemporáneo relacionado con el movimiento llamado Land Art. Estudió pintura y dibujo en la ciudad de Nueva York. Después de diplomarse en la Liga de Estudiantes de Arte en 1956, se inscribió en la Escuela del Museo de Brooklyn. Su tipo de pintura preferida es la pintura abstracta, tipo de pintura que dejó para consagrarse, a partir de 1962, a la escultura. Comenzó a trabajar en lugares suburbanos, empleando para sus trabajos el término Earthworks (obras de tierra). Sus construcciones, esculturales sin ninguna función utilitaria, son así obras efímeras. Sus obras son gigantescas, construidas con la ayuda de máquinas industriales, lejos de la población. Su obra más conocida posiblemente sea la Spiral Jetty creada en abril de 1970 en el Gran Lago Salado en Utah. Falleció en accidente de aviación en 1973, mientras exploraba el emplazamiento para lo que sería la obra "Amarillo Ramp". Un proyecto que materializaría Nancy Holt en colaboración con Richard Serra.
