Esta escena de género representa a una mujer cosiendo; a su lado, un hombre le ofrece un puñado de monedas. En principio, parece una imagen típica de alcahuetería como otros cuadros análogos de la época. Sin embargo, la ambientación no es un burdel, sino que parece un interior doméstico austero. Tampoco aparece la figura de la alcahueta. Finalmente, la propia joven desarrolla una actividad doméstica, viste con sencillez, sin joyas, telas lujosas, plumas u otros elementos que podrían simbolizar la lujuria o el libertinaje. Por ello se ha estimado que podría estar ofreciéndole dinero como forma de propuesta matrimonial, más que como una forma de prostitución.

The Proposition is a genre painting of 1631 by Judith Leyster, now in the Mauritshuis in The Hague, who title it Man offering money to a young woman.[2][3] It depicts a woman, sewing by candlelight, as a man leans over her, touching her right shoulder with his left hand. He is offering her coins in his right hand, but she is apparently ignoring the offer and concentrating intently upon her sewing.[4][5][2] As we see the female protagonist ignore the advances of her suitor, this painting has been considered to potentially be a feminist work.[6]
