Interior (French: Intérieur), also known as The Rape (French: Le Viol), is an oil painting on canvas by Edgar Degas (1834–1917), painted in 1868–1869. Described as "the most puzzling of Degas's major works",[1] it depicts a tense confrontation by lamplight between a man and a partially undressed woman. The theatrical character of the scene has led art historians to seek a literary source for the composition, but none of the sources proposed has met with universal acceptance. Even the painting's title is uncertain; acquaintances of the artist referred to it either as Le Viol or Intérieur, and it was under the latter title that Degas exhibited it for the first time in 1905.[2] The painting is housed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.[3]

Interior (en francés: Intérieur), es una pintura al óleo sobre tela de Edgar Degas (1834–1917), pintada en 1868–1869. Descrita como "la más desconcertante de las obras principales de Degas", representa una tensa y silenciosa confrontación en un interior a la luz de una lámpara, entre un hombre de pie y una mujer sentada en ropa interior.[1] El carácter teatral de la escena ha dirigido a los historiadores del arte a buscar una fuente literaria para la composición, pero ninguna de las propuestas ha conocido aceptación universal. Incluso el título de la pintura es incierto; conocidos del artista se refirieron a ella como Le viol o Intérieur, y fue bajo este último título que Degas la exhibió por primera vez en 1905.[2] La pintura está albergada en el Museo de Filadelfia de Arte.[3]
