Cette Adoration des mages dite Tondo Cook, est une œuvre d'attribution incertaine, communément attribuée à Fra Filippo Lippi, conservée à la National Gallery of Art de Washington.

Il s'agit de l'Adoration des mages, thème artistique récurrent de l'iconographie de la peinture chrétienne.

Historique

Il s'agit d'un tondo (un tableau rond de 137,3 cm de diamètre peint « a tempera » sur bois), un des premiers conçus comme une œuvre d'art à part entière, analogue à celui de Domenico Veneziano, et non pas comme desco da parto, plateau rond utilitaire et décoratif offert à l'occasion du premier-né (et peint sur les deux faces).

Au XIX^e siècle, il est attribué successivement à Botticelli, Benozzo Gozzoli et autant à Filippino Lippi.

En 1932, Bernard Berenson attribue le tableau à Fra Filippo Lippi en réexaminant son parcours artistique.

La critique récente hésite entre Fra Filippo Lippi et Fra Angelico, ou même pense aux deux conjointement.

Le tableau fut restauré en 1947-1948[1].

The Adoration of the Magi is a tondo, or circular painting, of the Adoration of the Magi assumed to be that recorded in 1492 in the Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence as by Fra Angelico. It dates from the mid-15th century and is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. Most art historians think that Filippo Lippi painted more of the original work, and that it was added to some years after by other artists, as well as including work by assistants in the workshops of both the original masters. It has been known as the Washington Tondo and Cook Tondo after Herbert Cook, and this latter name in particular continues to be used over 50 years after the painting left the Cook collection.[1][2]

L'Adorazione dei Magi, detta Tondo Cook, è opera, tempera su tavola (diametro 137,2 cm), di attribuzione incerta, probabilmente iniziata da Beato Angelico e portata a termine da Filippo Lippi. Le ipotesi più suffragate sono che venne eseguita in due fasi, in particolare gli anni trenta per l'Angelico e gli anni cinquanta del XV secolo per il Lippi. È conservata nella National Gallery of Art di Washington.
