La luce del mondo (The Light of the World) è un dipinto allegorico di William Holman Hunt realizzato tra il 1853 e il 1854. Rappresenta la figura di Gesù in procinto di bussare ad una porta ricoperta di erbacce e a lungo non aperta.

Secondo Hunt: "la porta nel dipinto è senza maniglia, e pertanto può essere aperta solo dall'interno, il che rappresenta la mente ostinatamente chiusa". Interessante notare dalla lampada si illumina la mezzaluna araba e la stella di David. Hunt, 50 anni dopo averlo pitturato, sentì che doveva spiegarne il simbolismo.

L'originale, dipinto di notte in una capanna improvvisata a Worcester Park nel Surrey, si trova adesso in una sala laterale della cappella del Keble College a Oxford. Verso la fine della sua vita, Hunt dipinse anche una versione del quadro a grandezza naturale. L'opera, dopo un tour mondiale durante il quale attrasse grandi folle, venne poi collocata nella Cattedrale di St. Paul a Londra.

Nell'epoca vittoriana questo dipinto fu oggetto di una grande devozione popolare e nel 1873 ispirò il musicista Arthur Sullivan che compose un oratorio con lo stesso titolo: The Light of the World.

[en] The Light of the World (painting)

The Light of the World (1851–1853) is an allegorical painting by the English Pre-Raphaelite artist William Holman Hunt (1827–1910) representing the figure of Jesus preparing to knock on an overgrown and long-unopened door, illustrating Revelation 3:20: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me". According to Hunt: "I painted the picture with what I thought, unworthy though I was, to be divine command, and not simply a good subject."[1] The door in the painting has no handle, and can therefore be opened only from the inside, representing "the obstinately shut mind".[2] The painting was considered by many to be the most important and culturally influential rendering of Christ of its time.[3]

«Светоч мира» (англ. The Light of the World) — аллегорическое полотно художника-прерафаэлита Уильяма Холмана Ханта, представляющее фигуру Христа у массивной, заросшей бурьяном, давно запертой двери. Картина иллюстрирует Откровение Иоанна Богослова: «Се стою у двери и стучу. Если кто услышит голос Мой и отворит дверь, войду к нему, и буду вечерять с ним, и он со Мною» (Откр. 3:20). Название картины также взято из Евангелия: «Аз есмь свет миру» (Ин. 8:12) (англ. I am the light of the world).
