Sebastian de Morra era un nano buffone di corte, storpio dalla nascita. Velázquez lo ritrasse seduto, in una posizione che ricorda i burattini, con un'espressione severa e triste che contrasta con la sua professione, quasi a voler dar voce al tormento dell'uomo.

The Portrait of Sebastián de Morra is a painting by Diego Velázquez of Sebastian de Morra, a court dwarf and jester at the court of Philip IV of Spain. It was painted around 1644 and is now in the Prado in Madrid.[1] Not much is documented about De Morra's life, other than the fact that he was brought to Spain by Phillip IV in 1643 and served the court for three years before his death in 1649.[2] It was not until Velázquez became a court painter that he showed dwarfs with a warmer and naturalistic style compared to previous paintings.[3] De Morra looks directly at the viewer, motionless, making no hand gestures, leading one critic to suggest that the painting represents a denunciation of the court's treatment of de Morra and other dwarfs.[4] Recently discovered inventories and previous documents relating to De Morra reveal that he was also known by a nickname, El Primo.[5][es] El bufón el Primo
El bufón el Primo,[1] anteriormente conocido como El bufón don Sebastián de Morra, es una pintura al óleo de Velázquez conservada en el Museo del Prado (Madrid, España), desde su apertura en 1819. Pertenece al grupo de retratos de bufones y «hombres de placer» de la corte pintados por Velázquez para decorar estancias secundarias y de paso en los palacios reales, en los que, dado su carácter informal, el pintor pudo ensayar nuevos recursos expresivos con mayor libertad que en los retratos oficiales de la familia real, con su carga representativa.[fr] Sebastián de Morra
