Il dipinto mostra la prima apertura del Parlamento australiano, avvenuta il 9 maggio 1901 nel Royal Exhibition Building di Melbourne, ed è custodito nel Palazzo del Parlamento di Canberra.

Contesto storico

Il 1º gennaio 1901 le colonie australiane si unirono in una federazione, e dato che la neonata Costituzione prevedeva la costruzione di una capitale ex novo, la sede del governo sarebbe stata temporaneamente Melbourne.

Il Parlamento giurò il 9 maggio 1901 alla presenza del figlio di Edoardo VII, il duca di Cornwall e York (che succederà al padre con il nome di Giorgio V). Per celebrare l'avvenimento la Australian Art Association decise di commissionare un dipinto da "regalare alla nazione".

King George V), May 9, 1901, more commonly known in Australia as The Big Picture, is a 1903 painting by the Australian artist Tom Roberts. The painting, measuring 304.5 by 509.2 centimetres (119.9 in × 200.5 in), or roughly 10 by 17 feet, depicts the opening of the first Parliament of Australia at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne on 9 May 1901.

La Grande Image est un tableau peint par Tom Roberts en 1903. Il mesure 304,5 cm de haut sur 509,2 cm de large. Il est conservé au Parliament House à Canberra. Il représente la première séance du Parlement d'Australie au Palais royal des expositions. Le tableau est prêté depuis 1958 par la couronne britannique.
