Storia e descrizione

Il dipinto fu commissionato nel 1884 da Edward Hornor Coates, un ricco uomo d'affari di Philadelphia nonché mecenate.

Secondo lo storico dell'arte Doreen Bolger questo è il quadro di Eakins che mostra la figura nuda nella sua resa più compiuta[2], ed è stato definito come il più finemente progettato di tutti i suoi quadri all'aperto[3]. A partire dal Rinascimento il corpo umano è stato sempre più considerato come base della formazione artistica, oltre che il soggetto più difficile da rappresentare in arte[4].

Per la realizzazione di questo lavoro, l'autore ha approfittato di una deroga al generale atteggiamento dell'era vittoriana nei confronti della nudità in generale[5], e di quella maschile in particolare; nuotare nudi veniva però ampiamente accettato in quel periodo storico, e per i maschi era vista come cosa del tutto normale, anche in luoghi pubblici all'aperto come fiumi o laghetti.

"The Swimming Hole" sviluppa alcuni temi che in precedenza erano stati affrontati in "The Gross Clinic" (1875) e "William Rush" (1877), ma che continueranno a essere esplorati nei suoi dipinti di pugili e lottatori[6]. Questo dipinto è stato ampiamente citato come esser uno dei primi esempi di omoerotismo palese nell'arte americana[7].

Eakins si riferisce a questo quadro come "Swimming" nel 1885, e come "The Swimmers" nel 1886. Il titolo "The Swimming Hole" risale dal 1917 (l'anno dopo la morte dell'artista), quando il lavoro è stato così descritto dalla vedova, Susan Macdowell Eakins[2], anche lei pittrice e fotografa.

Quattro anni più tardi, ha intitolato l'opera "The Old Swimming Hole", in riferimento al poema del 1882 "The Old Swimmin'-Hole" di James Whitcomb Riley[8][9].

Eakins ha fatto parecchi schizzi a olio in loco e studi fotografici prima i dipingere la versione definitiva.

Swimming (oder Swimming Hole) ist ein Ölgemälde von Thomas Eakins aus dem Jahr 1885. Abgebildet sind Eakins, einige seiner Studenten und sein schwimmender Hund. Von Teilen der US-amerikanischen Homosexuellenbewegung wird das Gemälde als Beleg für Eakins’ angenommene Homosexualität gewertet. The Swimming Hole (also known as Swimming and The Old Swimming Hole) is an 1884–85 painting by the American artist Thomas Eakins (1844–1916), Goodrich catalog #190, in the collection of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas. Executed in oil on canvas, it depicts six men swimming naked in a lake, and is considered a masterpiece of American painting.[1] According to art historian Doreen Bolger it is "perhaps Eakins' most accomplished rendition of the nude figure",[2] and has been called "the most finely designed of all his outdoor pictures".[3] Since the Renaissance, the human body has been considered both the basis of artists' training and the most challenging subject to depict in art,[4] and the nude was the centerpiece of Eakins' teaching program at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.[2] For Eakins, this picture was an opportunity to display his mastery of the human form.
