Vendita di una schiava romana[1] (in francese: Vente d'esclaves à Rome; in russo: Продажа невольницы?, traslitterato: Prodaža nevol'nicy) è un dipinto a olio su tela del pittore francese Jean-Léon Gérôme, realizzato nel 1884 circa.[2] Il quadro oggi è conservato nel museo dell'Ermitage di San Pietroburgo.[3]

Descrizione
Il quadro è ambientato in un mercato di schiavi nell'antica Roma. Al centro della pedana si trova una donna completamente nuda che è stata appena spogliata dal trafficante di schiavi situato alla sua destra, il quale la mostra alla folla. La donna si copre gli occhi con la mano destra a causa della situazione umiliante che la vede esposta ad una folla così vasta.[4] Un'altra donna più giovane, anche lei nuda, è seduta per terra e cerca di coprirsi con le braccia e le gambe.
Dietro la giovane seduta per terra si trova una donna più adulta, avvolta da un velo nero, che regge un neonato. Accanto a lei si trovano due bambini nudi, forse i suoi figli. Il volto della donna è avvolto dal terrore, perché lei sa che presto sarà messa all'asta e che probabilmente sarà separata per sempre dai suoi bambini.
Dietro la bancarella due uomini registrano le vendite, mentre dietro di loro si trova un altro gruppo di schiavi (tra questi sono presenti un anziano e un uomo dalla pelle scura).
Quest'opera è molto simile al dipinto Il mercato romano degli schiavi realizzato da Gérôme nello stesso anno.[5] Gérôme, infatti, realizzò vari dipinti raffiguranti il tema della schiavitù ambientati nel mondo romano o in quello mediorientale, raffigurando sia la disperazione degli schiavi messi in vendita sia le pose sensuali dei personaggi e il nudo estetico.[6]

Slave Market in Ancient Rome is a painting of about 1884 by French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme, who was known for combining classical, romantic, and realistic elements.[1] It depicts an Ancient Roman slave auction in progress. At the center of a high dais is a completely nude woman having been recently undressed by the slave dealer situated to her right, who is displaying her to the crowd as they bid on her. The woman shields her eyes with her right hand due to the humiliating predicament of being publicly exposed in front of such a large crowd. Another nude young woman sits fearfully at the first woman's feet, covering her breasts with her legs in a protective pose, however, this leaves her genitals exposed to the crowd. Behind her is an older clothed woman holding an infant, she is surrounded by two naked children who she is probably the mother of. Her face has a look of dread as she knows she is to be auctioned soon, most likely being separated from her children forever. Behind the auction booth, two men are keeping an account of the sales, with a row of enslaved men looking on from behind them. It is one of his six slave-market scenes set in either ancient Rome or 19th-century Istanbul that Gérôme painted during his career.[fr] Vente d'esclaves à Rome
