Gregorio Fernández was commissioned by the Illustrious Penitential Brotherhood of the Holy Cross, to undertake a “paso”, a group of wooden statues, depicting the flagellation of Christ. The sculpture of the Christ started as a figure for this composition and was in the mid 17th century when the sculpture was presented as a separate and independent work. The sculpture is characterized by combining classical form and naturalism with the intensity of religious emotion.

El Señor atado a la columna es una de las obras maestras del escultor barroco español Gregorio Fernández, que la talló en 1619 para la Cofradía Penitencial de la Santa Vera Cruz de Valladolid. Constituye el mayor exponente de representación escultórica de Cristo atado a la columna por su perfección anatómica y serena expresión, sirviendo de modelo posterior a otras muchas del periodo Barroco a un nivel no superado.
