Antonietta Raphaël, née en 1895 en Lituanie, et morte en 1975 à Rome, est une artiste peintre et une sculptrice.

Biographie

Antonietta Raphaël est née en 1895 à Kaunas[1] ou en 1900 à Kaunas[2] ou à Vilnius[3]. Elle est la fille d'un rabbin[1].

Après la mort de son père en 1905, elle déménage avec sa mère à Londres où elle obtient un diplôme en piano à la Royal Academy of Music, travaille aussi au théâtre[4], et étudie la sculpture[1]. Elle devient enseignante d'anglais et une amie du sculpteur Jacob Epstein[5].

Elle se rend à Paris 1924 et se lie d'amitié avec Soutine, Chagall, Pascin et Kisling puis poursuit ses études à Rome l'année suivante[1]. Elle épouse le peintre Mario Mafai avec qui elle fonde l'école romaine de la Via Cavour[1].

Elle est morte en 1975 à Rome[2].

Antonietta Raphaël (* 1895 in Kaunas, Russisches Kaiserreich; gestorben 5. September 1975 in Rom, Italien) war eine italienische Bildhauerin und Malerin jüdischer Herkunft. Zusammen mit ihrem Mann Mario Mafai begründete sie die Scuola Romana („Römische Schule“).[1] Ihre Kunst war gekennzeichnet durch eine umfassende anti-akademische Überzeugung. Ihr Hauptwerk nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bestand aus Skulpturen. Vor allem die zarte und lebendige Leiblichkeit,[2] die Werke wie Miriam dormiente (Sleeping Miriam) und Nemesis ausdrücken, wurde von ihren Kritikern hervorgehoben.

Antonietta Raphaël (1895 – 5 September 1975) was an Italian sculptor and painter of Jewish heritage and Lithuanian birth, who founded the Scuola Romana (Roman School) movement together with her husband Mario Mafai.[1] She was an artist characterised by a profound anti-academic conviction, also affirmed by her sculptures which, especially after World War II, dominated her output. They highlighted the tender and vibrant carnality present in stone, with works such as Miriam dormiente (Sleeping Miriam) and Nemesis.
