D'après Neville Jason, Frank Owen Dobson est né le 18 novembre 1886 dans l'hôpital Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital (en) à Marylebone Road (en) à Londres[1]. Selon l'Encyclopædia Britannica, il est né 18 novembre 1888[2]. Il est le fils de Frank Dobson (1857-1900), un artiste, et de son épouse, Alice Mary Owen[1]. Ses parents vivent au 7 Acton Street à Clerkenwell dans le Grand Londres[1]. Il rejoint la Leyton Technical School à l'âge de onze ans[3]. Son père meurt lorsqu'il a quatorze ans[3]. De 1900 à 1902 il étudie à la Leyton School of Art[4]. De 1902 à 1904 il travaille en tant qu'assistant pour William Reynolds-Stephens (en)[5]. Il se consacre d'abord principalement à la peinture, puis après la première guerre mondiale, se tourne de plus en plus vers la sculpture[6]. Durant cette guerre, il est un membre du régiment Artists' Rifles[7]. Dans les années 1920 et 1930, il est un membre important de l'avant-garde britannique, et avec Henri Gaudier-Brzeska et Jacob Epstein, il représente en Grande-Bretagne et dans le monde le meilleur et le plus avancé dans la sculpture britannique[8].

Frank Dobson est professeur de sculpture au Royal College of Art de 1946 à 1953 et est élu cette dernière année Royal Academician [9].

Il est mort le 22 juillet 1963 dans sa ville natale[3]^,[10].

Sa réputation a été éclipsée par le modernisme mais elle revient maintenant (2011), il est reconnu comme l'un des personnages clés de la sculpture britannique du XX^e siècle[11].

Frank Owen Dobson RA (18 November 1886 – 22 July 1963) was a British artist and sculptor.[1] Dobson began as a painter, and his early work was influenced by cubism, vorticism, and futurism. After World War I, however, he turned increasingly toward sculpture in a more or less realist style. Throughout the 1920s and the early 1930s he built a reputation as an outstanding sculptor and was among the first in Britain to prefer direct carving of the material rather than modelling a maquette first.[2] The simplified forms and flowing lines of much of his sculptures, particularly his female nudes, showed the influence of African art.[3] From 1946 to 1953 Dobson was Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1953. While Dobson was one of the most esteemed artists of his time, after his death his reputation declined with the move towards postmodernism and conceptual art. However, in recent years a revival has begun. Dobson is now seen as one of the most important British sculptors of the 20th century.[4]
