Sir John Tenniel (Bayswater, Londres, 28 février 1820 - 25 février 1914) est un illustrateur britannique, notamment connu pour ses illustrations des Aventures d'Alice au pays des merveilles de Lewis Carroll (1866). Il fut l'un des premiers à représenter le père Noël en 1850[1].

Il a aussi dessiné de nombreuses caricatures pour le magazine Punch à la fin du XIX^e siècle.

Il s'est d'abord formé seul, avant d'entrer à la Royal Academy. En 1836, il soumit son premier dessin à l'exposition de la Society of British Artists. En 1845, il soumit un carton intitulé An Allegory of Justice à un concours pour les décorations murales du nouveau Palais de Westminster. Il reçut pour cela une bourse de 200 livres et une commande pour une fresque dans la Chambre des lords.

Sir John Tenniel (/ˈtɛniəl/;[1] 28 February 1820 – 25 February 1914)[2] was an English illustrator, graphic humorist and political cartoonist prominent in the second half of the 19th century. He was knighted for artistic achievements in the 1893 Queen's Birthday Honours List. Tenniel is remembered mainly as the principal political cartoonist for Punch magazine for over 50 years and for his illustrations to Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871).
