    Nan Hoover (* 12. Mai 1931 in New York City; † 9. Juni 2008 in Berlin) gehört zu den Pionierinnen der internationalen Licht-, Video- und Performancekunst. Ihre frühen Arbeiten waren geprägt durch die Malerei des Surrealismus. Seit Beginn der 1970er Jahre näherte sie sich in ihren Performances, Videoarbeiten und Lichtinstallationen einer auf Reduktion und Reflexion angelegten minimalistischen Formensprache an, in der die Zeit durch das Mittel extremer Langsamkeit und der Raum durch das Medium des Lichts interpretiert und bewusst gemacht werden. Weltweit hat sie seither in internationalen Museen, Ausstellungshäusern und im öffentlichen Raum mit Ausstellungen, Performances und Lichtinstallationen von sich reden gemacht. 1977 nahm sie an der sechsten und 1987 an der achten documenta in Kassel teil. 1986 war sie Dozentin am San Francisco Art Institute, 1986–1996 Professorin an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf und 1998–1999 Professorin an der Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam.

    Nan Hoover (12 May 1931 – 9 June 2008) was a Dutch/American-expatriate artist who is known for her pioneering work in video art, photography and performance art. She spent almost four decades living and working in the Netherlands.[1] She also used the mediums of drawing, painting, photography and film and created art objects and sculptures. One of the main themes of her art was light and motion. The rigorous, minimalist handling of her means as well as the intense concentration with which she performed within spaces of light and shadow are the most salient characteristics of her artistic work.
