François o Frans Eisen (Bruxelles, 1695 circa – Parigi, 1778 -1798) è stato un pittore, incisore e decoratore fiammingo, d'interni, che operò soprattutto in Francia[1].

Biografia

Padre di Charles e Louis Eisen, fu apprendista di Pierre Roger nel 1705-1706 a Valenciennes e nel 1716 divenne membro della locale Corporazione di San Luca[1]. Nel 1732 ritornò a Bruxelles, dove operò fino al 1745[1]. Nello stesso anno si trasferì a Parigi dove rimase e lavorò fino al 1778[1].

Dipinse soggetti di genere, in particolare relativi alla pesca, allegorici, mitologici, paesaggi e ritratti[1]. Riprese soggetti resi popolari da altri artisti, come François Boucher e Jean-Honoré Fragonard: giochi, venditori di cialde e sultani, con cui probabilmente realizzava quadri da studiolo per mercanti d'arte in base alle richieste della ricca borghesia[2]. Eseguì numerose acqueforti da opere del Rubens, tra cui Gesù Cristo dona le chiavi a san Pietro[3].

Fu suo allievo il figlio Charles[1].

[en] François Eisen

François Eisen, an engraver, as well as a painter of historical and genre subjects, was born at Brussels about 1685. When twenty years of age he went to Valenciennes, and remained there, painting many pictures for its churches and monastic institutions, until 1745, in which year he removed to Paris. At the age of ninety he, with his wife, was admitted into the Hospital for Incurables, where he was still living in 1778. There are two of his works in the Museum of Valenciennes, a Vision of St. Mary Magdalen, and an Astrologer. He etched a plate from the picture by Rubens of Christ giving the Keys to St. Peter, which was in the church of St. Gudule at Brussels.
