Sir George James Frampton, accademico reale, (Londra, 18 giugno 1860 – 21 maggio 1928), è stato uno scultore britannico e membro influente del movimento della nuova scultura[1].

Biografia

Frampton, figlio di uno scalpellino, in uno studio di architettura dopo aver studiato con William Silver Frith alla City and Guilds of London Art School (ex Lambeth School of Art). Passò poi alla Royal Academy Schools dove vinse la medaglia d'oro. Dal 1887 al 1890 Frampton intraprese ulteriori studi e lavorò nello studio di Antonin Mercie a Parigi.[2]

Tornato in Inghilterra fu insegnante presso la Slade School of Art nel 1893.[3] Sposò l'artista Christabel Cockerell dalla quale ebbe un figlio, il pittore Meredith Frampton.[4]

Opere principali

Fra le sculture pubbliche di Frampton si ricordano Peter Pan, i leoni al British Museum ed il monumento ad Edith Cavell posto all'esterno della National Portrait Gallery di Londra.[4]

Sir George James Frampton, RA (18 June 1860 – 21 May 1928) was a British sculptor. He was a leading member of the New Sculpture movement in his early career when he created sculptures with elements of Art Nouveau and Symbolism, often combining different materials such as marble and bronze in a single piece.[1] While his later works were more traditional in style, Frampton had a prolific career in which he created many notable public monuments, including several statues of Queen Victoria and later, after World War I, a number of war memorials.[1] These included the Edith Cavell Memorial in London, which, along with the Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens are possibly Frampton's best known works.[1]
