Philips Angel II (Leida, 1618 – Batavia, 11 luglio 1664) è stato un pittore, incisore, illustratore, commerciante, notaio e scrittore olandese del secolo d'oro.

Biografia

Cugino di Philips Angel I, fu attivo nella sua città natale dal 1637 al 1645: è datata 1637 un'incisione rappresentante una mano con una testa d'uomo[1]. Nel 1638 entrò a far parte della locale Corporazione di San Luca come maestro[1]. Si sposò nel 1639[1]. Nel 1642, nel giorno di San Luca, tenne un discorso poi pubblicato con il titolo Elogio della pittura costante[1]. Il 15 dicembre 1643 fece testamento ed il 4 aprile 1645 aderì al VOC e si trasferì nelle Indie Orientalii, a Batavia, dove rimase, pur con interruzioni, fino al 1665[1]. Tra il 1651 ed il 1656 visse in Persia, a Isfahan, dove fu maestro di disegno di Shah Abbas II, nipote di Shah Abbas il grande[1].

Philips Angel (van Leiden) (* 1618 in Leiden; † nach 11. Juli 1664 in Batavia, heute Jakarta) war ein niederländischer Maler, Stecher und Kunstschriftsteller, außerdem betätigte er sich auch als Agent und Kaufmann der Ostindien-Kompanie. Heute ist er als Autor eines 58-seitigen Büchleins relevant, das 1642 in Leiden publiziert wurde und das einzige Zeugnis holländischer Kunsttheorie um die Mitte des Goldenen Zeitalters ist.

Philips Angel II or Philips Angel van Leiden (c. 1618 in Leiden – after 11 July 1664 in Batavia, Dutch East Indies) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, etcher, writer and colonial administrator. Today he is remembered as the author of a 58-page booklet entitled 'Praise of the Art of Painting' which represents a rare resource for understanding Dutch art theory from the mid-17th century.
