The Walter and McBean Galleries presented an influential program of exhibitions highlighting innovative work by emerging artists and experimental work by more established artists, from throughout the United States and abroad.[1] The Walter and McBean Galleries are located at San Francisco Art Institute's Chestnut campus in Russian Hill.[2]

Hou Hanru (Chinese: 侯瀚如; pinyin: Hóu Hànrú; born 1963 in Guangzhou, China) is an international art curator and critic based in San Francisco, Paris and Rome. He is Artistic Director of the MAXXI in Rome, Italy.
Andrew McClintock, editor-in-chief of SFAQ and owner/director of Ever Gold Gallery,[3] was interim director of exhibitions and public programs from August 2012–September 2013. He curated the Gutai exhibition in 2013.[4]
Philip E. Linhares was Director of Exhibitions from 1967–1972 and 1973–1977, and curated "important and often experimental shows during his ten-year tenure, including [...] solo exhibitions of Wally Hedrick, Bruce Conner, William T. Wiley, Imogen Cunningham, Gladys Nilsson, Carlos Villa, and Bruce Nauman."[5] Linhares went on to work with Mills College, and became Chief Curator at the Oakland Museum of California in 1990.[6]
Other past directors included Helene Fried,[7] Karen Moss (1999-2004),[8] and Hou Hanrou (2006-2012).[9]
