L'edificio, fondato dal collezionista d'arte e filantropo Joseph Hirshhorn, espone oltre seimila opere fra cui esemplari di Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko, Auguste Rodin, Jeff Koons, Alexander Calder, Henry Moore e Ron Mueck.[2][3] Si è stimato che l'Hirshorn Museum accolga circa 700.000 visitatori ogni anno.[4]
Storia
Verso la fine degli anni trenta, il Congresso degli Stati Uniti iniziò a progettare un museo nazionale d'arte contemporanea da integrare alla National Gallery of Art, ma i lavori vennero avviati soltanto a partire dagli anni sessanta a causa della grande depressione e delle tensioni della seconda guerra mondiale. Nel 1966 venne avviata la costruzione dell'Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden che venne aperto nel 1974.

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden is an art museum beside the National Mall, in Washington, D.C., the United States. The museum was initially endowed during the 1960s with the permanent art collection of Joseph H. Hirshhorn. It was designed by architect Gordon Bunshaft and is part of the Smithsonian Institution. El Museo Hirshhorm y Jardín de Esculturas es un museo de arte de Washington D. C., Estados Unidos, en el National Mall y fue diseñado por el arquitecto Gordon Bunshaft. Forma parte de la Institución Smithsonian. La colección se centra en arte contemporáneo y moderno. Fuera del museo, al aire libre, hay un jardín de esculturas, que incluye obras de artistas tales como Auguste Rodin, Joan Miró, Pablo Serrano y Alexander Calder.
