Le Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden est un musée consacré à l'art contemporain et à l'art moderne situé à Washington. Il fait partie de la Smithsonian Institution.

Le musée

Le bâtiment, sans ouverture extérieure, affichant une teinte claire, est constitué d'un cylindre à quatre pieds au centre duquel se trouve une grande fontaine. Conçu par l'architecte Gordon Bunshaft, il a ouvert ses portes en 1974. Situé sur le Mall, le musée se trouve entre le National Air and Space Museum et le Arts and Industries Building.

La circulation intérieure est très simple : on fait le tour de chacun des étages. Dedans pénètre la lumière captée par l'ouverture du musée. Cette architecture originale renferme des collections d'art contemporain.

À l'extérieur du bâtiment, un jardin de sculptures accueille, entre autres, des œuvres de Rodin et de Calder.

À l'origine, le musée accueillait plus de 6 000 pièces collectionnées par l'homme d'affaires Joseph Hirshhorn (en) et données au gouvernement fédéral en 1966. Ce nombre a depuis été porté à 12 000.

Das Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden ist ein Kunstmuseum an der National Mall in Washington, D.C. und wurde von dem Architekten Gordon Bunshaft entworfen. Es gehört zur Smithsonian Institution und wurde als Museum für zeitgenössische und moderne Kunst der Vereinigten Staaten konzipiert. Das Museum konzentriert sich in erster Linie auf die Kunst aus der Zeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, mit besonderem Schwerpunkt auf Kunst der letzten 30 Jahre. Außerhalb des Museums befindet sich ein Skulpturengarten mit Werken von Künstlern wie Auguste Rodin und Alexander Calder.

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden is an art museum beside the National Mall, in Washington, D.C., the United States. The museum was initially endowed during the 1960s with the permanent art collection of Joseph H. Hirshhorn. It was designed by architect Gordon Bunshaft and is part of the Smithsonian Institution. It was conceived as the United States' museum of contemporary and modern art and currently focuses its collection-building and exhibition-planning mainly on the post–World War II period, with particular emphasis on art made during the last 50 years.[2]

El Museo Hirshhorm y Jardín de Esculturas es un museo de arte de Washington D. C., Estados Unidos, en el National Mall y fue diseñado por el arquitecto Gordon Bunshaft. Forma parte de la Institución Smithsonian. La colección se centra en arte contemporáneo y moderno. Fuera del museo, al aire libre, hay un jardín de esculturas, que incluye obras de artistas tales como Auguste Rodin, Joan Miró, Pablo Serrano y Alexander Calder. El edificio tiene tanto atractivo como la colección que hay dentro, y parece una gran nave espacial aparcada en el National Mall. Se trata de un cilindro abierto y elevado por cuatro gigantescas “piernas”, con una gran fuente en el centro del patio interior. La gerencia de la Smithsonian le comunicó a Bunshaft antes del diseño del edificio que el edificio debía provocar un contraste con el resto de la ciudad para ser capaz de albergar una colección de arte moderno.
