Equestrian Portrait of Thomas Francis, Prince of Carignano is a 1634 painting by Anthony van Dyck, now in the Galleria Sabauda in Turin. It shows Thomas Francis, Prince of Carignano on a prancing horse, as an allegory of his holding the reins of command even in difficult moments.[1] He is shown wearing the insignia and red sash of the Supreme Order of the Most Holy Annunciation, conferred on him in 1616 by his father Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy.[2] In 1742 the work was sold to the King of Sardinia.[3]

Le Portrait équestre du prince Thomas de Savoie-Carignan est un portrait équestre de Thomas de Savoie-Carignan commandé à Antoine van Dyck en 1634. Il est conservé à la Galerie Sabauda de Turin.

Tommaso Francesco di Savoia, principe di Carignano, commissionò due ritratti a van Dyck nel 1634: uno a mezzo busto, che fu poi regalato ai sovrani d'Inghilterra, e questo ritratto equestre. In questo periodo, il principe si trovava all'apice della sua carriera come condottiero militare: era al servizio del re di Spagna Filippo II, che lo aveva nominato reggente dei Paesi Bassi del Sud. Per questo ritratto, van Dyck si rifà alla grande tradizione di ritratti equestri, dove il cavallo si sta impennando, a simboleggiare la capacità del principe a reggere le redini del comando anche in momenti difficili.[1]
