The figure on the right is believed to be Renoir's mistress, Lise Tréhot. Tréhot worked for Renoir as a model on many occasions. At the time the painting was executed Bazille and Renoir shared a Paris studio in rue de la Condamine. [1] Bazille complained that the models "cost the Earth." The painting was declined for exhibition in the Paris Salon. Bazille subsequently never publicly exhibited the work.[2]

Like many Orientalist academic paintings from the nineteenth century, this painting replicates patterns and decor from countries in the East. The rich colors and ornate patterns of the fabrics and rugs lend the painting an air of luxury and opulence.[3]

In an unfinished condition the work can be seen on the wall of Bazille's studio in his 1870 painting Studio in Rue de La Condamine.
