Description

The painting is part of the collection of the Nasher Museum of Art in Durham.[1] It depicts a portrait of Mary Lillian Duke (1887–1960), when she was 24 years of age and decided to have a portrait painting of her own. The portrait was painted inside a park, with one of Mary's hand resting on the pedestal of a statue while the other holds a black hat. She was wearing a scarf of the same color that falls on her arms, resembling the color of her hair and creating a magnificent contrast with the light colors that she was wearing. The white dress, reminds of ancient statues from Greek, which are mostly white in colour. To make the portrait more graceful, Mary had a rose pinned on her dress near her chest and the bright red colour of the flower stands out above everything.[2]

Provenance

The painting was one of the four paintings sent by Benjamin Duke to Sorolla, for his residence in New York, which was then under construction. Nicholas Duke Biddle, a relative of Mary Lillian Duke Biddle, donated the painting to Duke University.[2] Since that time, it has belonged to the collection of the Nasher Museum of Art in Durham.

Miss Mary Lillian Duke Biddle est une peinture à l'huile sur toile de Joaquim Sorolla. Elle est conservée au Nasher Museum of Art de l'Université Duke à Durham (Caroline du Nord)[1]. La toile a probablement été peinte à Paris à l'été 1911. Elle fait partie des quatre tableaux commandés par Benjamin Duke à Sorolla, alors que leur résidence à New York était en construction. Mademoiselle Mary Lillian Duke Biddle (en) a 24 ans lorsqu'elle pose pour Sorolla. Elle est sereine et distinguée. Elle est représentée dans un parc, la main appuyée au piédestal d'une statue, l'autre baissée avec un chapeau noir à la main. Un foulard de même couleur tombe sur ses bras, rappelant la couleur de la chevelure et créant un puissant contraste avec les couleurs claires qui dominent. La robe blanche rappelle les statues grecques, détail renforcé par le piédestal au second plan. Une rose est posée sur la poitrine. En second plan, le rouge vif des fleurs ressort des feuillages[2].
