The Bad Mothers or The Evil Mothers (Italian: Le cattive madri) is an oil on canvas painting by Giovanni Segantini, created in 1894, now in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, in Vienna. It is the latest of four works in which he keeps returning to the motif of women in trees. The other three were The Fruit of Life (1889), The Punishment of Lust (1891) and The Angel of Life (1894) and together they were his first Symbolist works.[1][2][3]

Die bösen Mütter (Le cattive madri) ist eines der bekanntesten Gemälde des Malers Giovanni Segantini. Es stammt aus dem Jahr 1894 und ist das jüngste von vier Bildern, in denen Segantini das Motiv der „Frau im Baum“ aufgreift. Die drei anderen Bilder sind „Die Frucht der Liebe“ (Il frutto dell’amore) aus dem Jahr 1889, „Die Strafe der Wolllüstigen“ (Il castigo delle lussuriose) von 1891 und „Engel des Lebens“ (L’angelo della vita) von 1894. Die Bilder sind Segantinis erste symbolistische Arbeiten.

Les Mauvaises Mères (en italien Le cattive madri) est l'un des tableaux les plus célèbres du peintre Giovanni Segantini. Il date de 1894 et est le premier d'une série de quatre dans lesquels Segantini reprend le motif de la « Femme dans l'arbre ». Les trois autres tableaux sont Le Fruit de l'Amour (Il frutto dell'amore) de 1889, Le Châtiment de la Luxure (Il castigo delle lussuriose) de 1891 et L'Ange de la Vie (L'angelo della vita) de 1894. Ces peintures sont les premières œuvres symbolistes de Segantini.
