Cassatt was an American artist who lived abroad in Europe for more than a decade. Her subjects were frequently domestic scenes. The Cup of Tea depicts a "social ritual for upper-middle-class women".[3] It is painted in an impressionist manner[4][5] using contrasting, complementary colors.[6]
