The Dance of Life or Life's Dance is an 1899–1900 expressionist painting by Edvard Munch, now in the National Museum of Art in Norway.[1] The arch of life spans from white young virgin in white over the pair with red wife to an old widow in black.

The painting was an important work in Munch's project The Frieze of Life. In creating the painting, Munch was allegedly inspired by the Helge Rode play Dansen gaar, of which Munch kept a copy in his personal library.[2] This painting clearly reflects Munch's ambivalence towards the women in his life.

Olaf Schou purchased the painting in Oslo in 1910, immediately presenting it to the National Gallery.

Der Tanz des Lebens (norwegisch: Livets dans) ist ein Gemälde des norwegischen Malers Edvard Munch, das in den Jahren 1899 und 1900 entstand. Es ist eines der letzten Bilder seines Lebensfrieses, der Zusammenstellung seiner zentralen Werke über die Themen Leben, Liebe und Tod. Vor dem Hintergrund einer Tanzveranstaltung am Strand richtet sich der Fokus des Bildes auf ein tanzendes Paar und zwei flankierende Frauen im Vordergrund. Es hat autobiografische Wurzeln in Munchs Beziehung zu Tulla Larsen, die in den zwei Frauen am Bildrand dargestellt ist. In späteren Werkphasen wiederholte Munch das Motiv mehrmals, auch unter den Titeln Tanz am Strand (norwegisch: Dans på stranden) oder Tanz am Meer (norwegisch: Dans ved sjøen).
