Hintergrund

Das Werk stammt von Surab Zereteli und war ein Geschenk der russischen Regierung an die Vereinigten Staaten zum Gedenken an die Opfer der Terroranschläge des 11. September 2001 sowie des Bombenanschlages auf das World Trade Center 1993. Das Tear Drop Memorial wurde während einer Zeremonie am 11. September 2006, in Anwesenheit von Wladimir Putin und Bill Clinton, enthüllt.

Das Mahnmal ist 30 Meter hoch und aus Stahl und Bronze gefertigt. In der Mitte des Kunstwerkes ist die ca. 12 m große Nachbildung einer Träne aus Stahl angebracht. Am Fuße sind ringsum Granitplatten angebracht, auf denen die Namen der Opfer der Terroranschläge eingraviert sind.

Aufgrund des Russischen Überfalls auf die Ukraine 2022 ließ die Stadt Bayonne den Namen Wladimir Putins auf dem Mahnmal entfernen.[1]

To the Struggle Against World Terrorism (also known as the Tear of Grief and the Tear Drop Memorial) is a 10–story sculpture by Zurab Tsereteli that was given to the United States as an official gift from the Russian government as a memorial to the victims of the September 11 attacks in 2001, and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.[1] It stands at the end of the former Military Ocean Terminal in Bayonne, New Jersey. Ceremonial groundbreaking occurred on September 16, 2005, in a ceremony attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin.[2] The monument was dedicated on September 11, 2006, in a ceremony attended by former U.S. President Bill Clinton.[1][3]
