The monument was erected in 1898 by the Art Societies of New York, a coalition of a number of municipal cultural institutions associated with Hunt: the Century Association, the Municipal Art Society (whose first president, in 1892, was Hunt),[2] the Metropolitan Museum of Art (whose main building was designed by Hunt), the Artist Artisans of New York, the Architectural League, the National Sculpture Society, the National Academy of Design, the Society of American Artists, the American Institute of Architects (co-founded by Hunt in 1857), the American Watercolor Society, and the Society of Beaux-Arts Architects.[1]
