Since 1863, twenty-nine sculptures[note 1] have been erected within New York City's 843-acre (3.41 km2) Central Park. Most were donated by individuals or civic organizations, rather than by the city. Early sculptures include statues of authors and poets installed along "Literary Walk", statues of American statesmen such as that of Daniel Webster, archetypical characters such as "the Pilgrim”, and picturesque compositions, such as The Hunter and The Falconer. Other notable sculptures include the statue of Balto, the Egyptian obelisk known as "Cleopatra's Needle", Alice in Wonderland, the Duke Ellington Memorial, and the Women's Rights Pioneers Monument.
