Storia

Le prime opere del museo provenivano dalla collezione del magnate della stampa James E. Scripps. Tra le successive donazioni spiccarono quella di filantropi come Charles Lang Freer e quelle dei baroni del settore automobilistico, come le famiglie di Ford, Firestone e Dodge. La fondazione ufficiale risale al 1883 e l'apertura al pubblico al 1885. La collezione di arte nordamericana è frutto soprattutto di acquisti diretti iniziati dopo subito dopo l'apertura. All'inizio del XX secolo si ebbe un'epoca prolifica per gli acquisti di opere internazionali. Nel 1927 venne completato il padiglione di Paul Cret, in stile Beaux-Arts.

Robert Hudson Tannahill fu un importante benefattore e difensore del museo, donando numerose opere nell'arco della sua vita. Alla sua morte donò la sua collezione di arte europea (con opere di Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Degas, Seurat, Henri Rousseau, Matisse e Picasso, dell'espressionismo tedesco, oltre a una vasta collezione di arte africana e una cospicua donazione per acquisti futuri.

Oggi una parte del sostegno al museo proviene dal governo dello Stato del Michigan, a fronte anche di un impegno del museo nella didattica e nella conservazione di opere d'arte di tutto lo Stato.

Il museo possiede opere di John Singleton Copley, George Caleb Bingham, Frederic Edwin Church, John Singer Sargent, Duncan Phyfe, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Paul Revere, James Abbott McNeill Whistler (Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket).

Das Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) in Detroit, Michigan, ist eines der bedeutendsten Kunstmuseen der Vereinigten Staaten. Es wurde 1885 gegründet. Die Sammlung umfasst mehr als 65.000 Exponate, beginnend mit der Kunst Altägyptens bis zur zeitgenössischen Kunst. Ein Schwerpunkt ist die Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte der USA seit dem 18. Jahrhundert. Das Fresko Detroit Industry in der Mitte des Museums gilt als eines der wichtigsten Werke Diego Riveras. Nach der Beantragung der Insolvenz durch die Stadt Detroit stand auch die Zukunft des Detroit Institute of Arts in Frage. Ein Verkauf der Sammlung konnte abgewendet und das Museum durch eine neue Trägerschaft dauerhaft gesichert werden.

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), located in Midtown Detroit, Michigan, has one of the largest and most significant art collections in the United States. With over 100 galleries, it covers 658,000 square feet (61,100 m2)[2][3] with a major renovation and expansion project completed in 2007 that added 58,000 square feet (5,400 m2). The DIA collection is regarded as among the top six museums in the United States with an encyclopedic collection which spans the globe from ancient Egyptian and European works to contemporary art.[2] Its art collection is valued in billions of dollars, up to $8.1 billion USD according to a 2014 appraisal.[4][5] The DIA campus is located in Detroit's Cultural Center Historic District, about 2 miles (3.2 km) north of the downtown area, across from the Detroit Public Library near Wayne State University.
