Il museo espone opere di: Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Vassily Kandinsky, Joan Miró, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, Juan Gris, Marc Chagall, Oskar Kokoschka, Alexej Jawlensky, Carlo Carrà, Giorgio de Chirico, Jean Arp, ecc.
La sede
Le due sedi sono caratterizzate dalla loro complementarità: mentre il K20 ha una struttura contemporanea (è frutto della realizzazione di un progetto del 1986 dello studio di architettura Dissing + Weitling), con linee modulari ondulate che conferiscono alla struttura dinamicità, il K21 ha sede in un antico palazzo barocco della città.
La storia
La collezione si caratterizza per le numerose tele di Paul Klee, il cui acquisto risale al 1960.

Die Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen ist die Kunstsammlung des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen in der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf. Sie vereint drei Ausstellungsorte: das K20 am Grabbeplatz 5 ⊙51.2284086.775998, das K21 im Ständehaus in der Ständehausstraße 1 ⊙51.2165366.773979 und das Schmela-Haus in der Mutter-Ey-Straße 3 ⊙51.2271166.775761. Die Kunstsammlung wurde 1961 von der Landesregierung als privatrechtliche Stiftung zum Zweck der öffentlichen Sammlung und Ausstellung des Kunstbesitzes gegründet. Seit dem Abtransport der Kollektion der Gemäldegalerie Düsseldorf im Jahre 1805 verfügte die Stadt nunmehr wieder über eine bedeutende staatliche Kunstsammlung. Hinter ihrer Gründung stand das identitätspolitische Bestreben der von Franz Meyers geführten Landesregierung, Nordrhein-Westfalen ein stärkeres kulturpolitisches Profil zu verleihen und auch dadurch das Staats- und Raumbewusstsein der Bewohner für das junge und heterogene Land zu heben.[1][en] Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen
